Shagang Shipping Company Ltd v HNA Group Company Ltd

The Court of Appeal has allowed an appeal by HNA Group Co Ltd, the guarantor under a charterparty. HNA had contested liability to Shagang Shipping Co Ltd on the basis of bribery, relying on various admissions which Shagang contended had been obtained by torture. The Court of Appeal has allowed HNA’s appeal from the judgment of Knowles J and has remitted the case to the Commercial Court for a part-rehearing.
